What is Laser Hair Removal?

There’s nothing more frustrating than unwanted body and facial hair. Sure, you can wax, shave and tweeze it, but the never-ending battle with stubborn hair and peach fuzz can finally be eliminated once and for all with laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is a permanent treatment that destroys the hair and its follicle. It works exceptionally well for eliminating unwanted hair on the face and body from head to toe. This tried-and-true solution leaves the skin soft and smooth without any unwanted hair in sight. At Skin Plus Beauty we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus which is safe for all skin tones. Also, it has a built-in cryogen cooling system that makes the treatment virtually painless.

For areas plagued by undesirable hair, laser hair removal can effectively reduce the amount of hair and its thickness. At Skin Plus Beauty, we offer the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus laser. This laser device provides a unique dual-wavelength system that makes it safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones. It’s also safe to perform the treatment on various body parts.

The main benefit of laser hair removal is an undeniable improvement in bothersome hair. The skin emerges softer and smoother by permanently eliminating hair from select areas. But in addition to improving skin texture, removing unwanted facial and body hair also comes with far fewer ingrown hairs since there’s no need to shave or wax. A significant reduction in ingrown hairs also means less hyperpigmentation and discoloration.

Laser hair removal is ideal for targeting unwanted hair in several areas, from head to toe. The most popular treatment areas for men and women include:

  • Face
  • Cheeks
  • Upper Lip
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Ears
  • Nose
  • Underarms
  • Areolas
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Bikini
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Legs
  • Toes
  • Arms
Laser hair removal destroys unwanted hair by first emitting a specific wavelength of light to the skin that transfers into heat through the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus laser handpiece. As the handpiece glides across the skin, the released heat selectively absorbs any pigment (melanin) present in the root of the hair to destroy it. This process creates permanent hair reduction.

White, gray, and light hair doesn’t respond as well as darker hair does. The laser’s light cannot always accurately detect the color of the hair to destroy it effectively. Most treatment machines work best on dark hair. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus laser is built on over 20 years of clinically proven performance across all skin types to exceed your expectations, offering increased power, speed, and the ability to treat larger spot sizes while using short pulse durations to treat fine, residual hair.

Our treatment is effective and comfortable. The skin is protected by a Dynamic Cooling Device, which sprays the treatment area before each laser pulse with a liquid cryogen coolant making the procedure very tolerable. Most patients compare each laser pass to the feeling of a rubber band snapping on the skin with a tingling sensation that quickly passes. After a session, the skin may be pink or red, warm to the touch for a few hours.

While laser hair removal has earned a reputation for being painful, the GentleMax Pro Plus laser is tolerable and painless. It has a built-in cryogen cooling system which blows cool air on your skin and makes each treatment more comfortable.

Although laser hair removal provides stellar results and leaves the skin smooth and with far less hair, it’s essential to know that results are not immediate. You will start to see results from your first session, however it can take a few months to see the full results and for the hair to shed. Not all hair follicles grow at the same rate, so it may appear like hair is still growing even if you have undergone a few treatment sessions.

Laser hair removal requires several sessions to eradicate the hair. That’s because the hair grows at different rates through the three phases of the growth cycle. The hair can be in various stages of the growth cycle at any time, so multiple sessions are necessary to eliminate all the hair in a treatment area. For it to be effective, heat must stunt the hair growth and destroy the follicle. The more heat the hair is exposed to during its growth cycle, the less hair grows from the follicle. With enough sessions, an ample yet safe amount of heat will be delivered to shorten the lifespan of the hairs and destroy them selectively.

Common FAQs

Waxing and shaving are quick and straightforward ways to remove hair temporarily, but the hair will grow back in a few days to a few weeks. Both shaving and waxing necessitate using tools to get rid of the hair. And with waxing, getting rid of the hair can be painful as hair is ripped out of the follicles. With both waxing and shaving, ingrown hairs and bumps are common.

No. While laser hair removal has earned a reputation for being painful, the GentleMax Pro Plus laser is tolerable and painless (although topical numbing cream or ice can be used to make you even more comfortable).

The GentleMax Pro Plus has a built-in cryogen cooling system which helps make each treatment 50% more comfortable than standard laser hair removal devices.

Everyone is different; your hair, skin, and treatment area determine how many sessions you’ll need. Most people need eight to twelve sessions to get rid of unwanted hair, but it is important to meet with a licensed Candela specialist before starting treatment to get an accurate recommendation.

Sessions are recommended every four weeks. Since laser hair removal can take nine to twelve months to complete, it’s vital to plan accordingly for the results to be seen. In addition, maintenance sessions are sometimes needed to keep the skin smooth and hair free.

Before each laser hair removal session, there are a few essential steps to follow. Make sure to shave (no waxing or tweezing) the treatment area a few hours (10 hours max) before your appointment. You’ll also want to come to your laser hair removal appointment with clean skin, so no deodorant, makeup, or lotion.

It’s essential that the skin is not recently exposed to the sun or has a tan. So avoid tanning or heavy sun exposure for a week before your session, and don’t use self-tanner for at least one month before your session.

After a session, keep the area clean, dry, and free of skin and body care products. It’s also important to keep the treated area from sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners, which can impede the results.

While it’s normal for there to be some redness after a session, if the skin remains red or becomes swollen, make sure to apply cortisone cream or aloe vera to soothe the skin.
